The function of adverbs of time

Adverbs of time are adverbs that explain when an action occurs. They can also clarify duration and frequency.

Clarifying time – examples:

  • They went to the movies yesterday
  • I wrote a grammar resource today 
  • I will call you back later

Clarifying duration – examples:

  • I would like to move abroad for a year
  • I’ve been waiting for you for an hour
  • This shop has been open since the ‘80s

Clarifying frequency – examples:

  • I often cook vegetarian and vegan recipes
  • rarely eat dairy
  • always drink coffee in the morning
