Using demonstratives to specify a time
You may want to specify a time without being specific to the hour.
Examples:

- I’m afraid I’m not free that day.
Demonstratives to specify a thing known in context
You can use ‘this’ or ‘that’ when referring to something without using the word if it’s obvious what you’re referring to.
Examples:
- Can you turn that down, please?
- Take this, it’ll make you feel better.
