Demonstratives: This, That, These, Those

Demonstratives as determiners

Use these when pointing out a thing or a person.

Examples:

  • This music isn’t really my taste.
  • I know that person from somewhere.

Using demonstratives to specify a time

You may want to specify a time without being specific to the hour.

Examples:

  • Do you want to meet up this evening?
  • I’m afraid I’m not free that day.

Demonstratives to specify a thing known in context

You can use ‘this’ or ‘that’ when referring to something without using the word if it’s obvious what you’re referring to.

Examples:

  • Can you turn that down, please?
  • Take this, it’ll make you feel better.
