Adjectives Describing Unequal Quantities

When comparing things that are not equal, we use the following construction: 

adjective indicating quantity + [noun] + than

As with describing equal quantities, when describing unequal quantities you must take into account countable and uncountable nouns. 

Countable nouns

When comparing unequal, countable nouns, use the words ‘more’ and ‘fewer’.

Examples:

• He has more books than most. 
• There are fewer buses today than yesterday.
• We have more readability features than anyone else. 

Uncountable nouns

For uncountable nouns, nouns that cannot be counted, use ‘more’ or ‘less’. 

Examples:

• I eat more food at Christmas than at any other time of year. 
• You have more patience than most people.
• The supermarket has less bread today than yesterday.
